Traveling, Ski Mountaineering and Climbing in Colorado and…

Aspen to Basalt sans Pavement

Anton and I hopped on our bikes early in the morning and had one of the colder rides up Smuggler I’ve ever had. We crested the top and shortcut over to the Iowa Gulch trail for a cooling descent before heading up to the 4 corners area via the red mountain road. We headed straight and dropped into the Lenado descent. I’d never ridden his trail and I’m crazy not to have, because it is a ripping and mostly smooth descent all the way to the little town of Lenado. From here we had over 3,000 feet of climbing up Larkspur Mountain road until we reached the Kobe trail. Most of the Kobe trail has been ravaged by dirt bikers, so thank god we were going down hill. Things were getting loose! We hit red hill road and took it to the very easy to miss Arbany-Kittle outskirts. Here things get really interesting as the trail is completely over grown in more than more than one section. We found ourselves doing more than one hike a bike and plenty of grassy freeride through handlebar high brush. Eventually we picked up sections of the more traveled trail and enjoyed a ripping descent into Basalt. With tired and muddy legs we hopped on the RFTA busses right on back to Aspen. I highly recommend this ride if you seek adventure and plenty of elbow room!
