Traveling, Ski Mountaineering and Climbing in Colorado and…

Japan day 5– Colorado Cowboys

By Caleb Wray

Yes, it was still deep today. Tyler is "trying" to make himself seen. Almost.

I am suffering from a severe powder hangover as we drive north from Niseko to Asahidake. I have spent an above average amount of time in snow and mountains, Niseko seems like another planet. A planet where trees don’t need photosynthesis to grow, rather they are nurtured through powdosenthesis. I have honestly never seen so much snow in my life. Snow falling from the sky is a constant, like water flowing down a riverbed, it is always happening.

We cut our teeth the first few days hunting the not so elusive untouched goodness at the resorts, then Ken graciously introduced us to the nearby backcountry. It satisfied our palates almost as well as his wife’s incredible baking.

While resting our weary bones last night, we had visions of skiing one of Hokkaido’s highest peaks, Mt. Yotei, a peak that graced us with a rare sunset viewing just a few days before. However upon waking this morning, giant flakes of skier happiness were still plummeting from the sky. So what to do? Well, let’s go skiing.

We started the day with some filming and ill-advised front flipping. The gracious Kate, who made our time in Niseko a five star event, joined again today (keep in mind we consider sleeping in the van 3 stars). The snow poured, my cameras cried, we smiled, and the roadside snow banks glared.

As the day progressed, we returned to our old tricks, powder hogging. Of course there is plenty to go around in Hokkaido, as it seems to snow about a foot every night, but we have already become snobs and found ourselves only selecting the coldest and deepest lines. I am sure these posts are making more jealous enemies than envious friends, but I can assure you that we wish that everyone could experience the bliss that we have been so fortunate to partake in over the last few days. For a powder lover, I doubt there is a better place on earth. Thanks to the many new friends who have made us feel so comfortable and welcome. Japan is magical. I leave you with a few of the images we captured today as we head north to a new adventure.

I am living vicariously through you all at the moment, keep the updates coming, and Anton perfect form on the front flip! Love from southern BC, where winter has taken a mid-season vacation and left us with hi temps and higher pressure. Peace Y’all!
