Mount Evans

Peak: Evans
Date: 5/28/08
Crew: Bill Middlebrook, Jcwhite
Route: N Face Couloirs
Super low mileage, 1800 vert

I needed a rest day this week, and Evans fit the bill, steep skiing, and not tons of work to get it.
I met Bill in the safeway parking lot in Idaho springs at 6 AM. We were skinning by 715 am from the summit lake parking lot:

We skinned around part of the lake and up the ridge and soon started bootpacking. Last week it rained a bunch in the front range, but on evans that must have been hail because under the top layer of snow there was a layer of marble sized hail. Glad I wasn’t up there then. Anyway we boot packed the rest of the way up the face and this couloir and hit the summit ridge about 100 vertical short of the summit. The wind was blowing pretty hard but it was reasonably warm. We found a little nook to put a little wax on the skis and transition out of crampons, and clicked in: I skied from the summit boulder and linked turns down through boulders and had to do one little ledge downclimb (skis on) to make it to the ridge, here it was a little sidestepping here and there, but I made it to the top of the chute without taking em off. As soon as Bill got there ( he walked, and I don’t blame him) we dropped in and found the conditions for skiing to be a bit strange, but manageable if you had any width to your skis. The drop in is fun and steep, and after that the couloir was great. Here are some pics:
