Traveling, Ski Mountaineering and Climbing in Colorado and…

New York Storm Skiing

James Simms and I decided on heading out to explore a zone that we hadn’t skied before. It was a fairly stormy day which created some intense trail breaking, bushwhacking, and some pretty difficult route finding to find our way to the base of our intended line. No matter though, our only real route finding error only allowed us to ski more waist deep powder.

Oops thats not where we wanted to be.

Deep booting with James bringing it up.

We sledded all the way to the New York creek trailhead only to find out that James had a broken binding on one of his skis. Oh well, quick sled back out and he grabbed a different pair out of the car before we sledded right back out. The snow had picked up its intensity, and we left the trailhead in goretex, just trying to stay dry. We made solid progress up to New York Creek proper before we found ourselves fighting our way up hill through dense trees. Eventually we broke out of treeline, but not quite where we intended. We enjoyed a couple hundred vert of face shots and put the skins back on, eventually making it to the base of the east face. We looked climbers right of the face and found what looked like a better ski line, so off we went.

Waist deep booting put us up to the ridgeline and ready to ski in less than awesome visibility.

Just about to the ridgeline.

Whether it was the flat light or the constant snow in the face, visibility was awful.
