South to Sihanoukville

The flight from Siem Reap to Sihanoukville is pretty quick, its quite a bit more expensive than the bus ride down there, but it saves you a full day of travel time, and by American standards it was relatively inexpensive. Sihanoukville has an interesting feel to it. The town smells a bit of corruption, and the cops in town only confirm this; stopping tourists on scooters to extort them out of small pittances. If you rent a scooter in Sihanoukville and you don’t want to pay the cops, easiest way to avoid this is pull out your video camera when they try to pull you over and start recording them, in most cases they shy away from having a video record of this and will just wave you on. After spending one night there, it was an easy decision to move on to the less crowded and less developed Otres Beach. We walked up and down the beach a couple times looking at the different guest houses and settled on Rise Otres; a small guest house run by a couple of British ladies. Accommodations are basic, but they are right on the Beach and you don’t need much. The food was also rather good. We spent a few days here before moving on to Kampot and eventually Kep.

Sunset our first night on the beach was pretty good. This may be one of the more relaxing places I've ever been.

It was this little ladies Birthday while we were there. She knew very well how to capture everyones attention.

A couple days in to being down here Elisabeth came down with something with similar symptoms to Dengue Fever. Trying to be cautious we took her to the local clinic. After having a Doctors visit, a blood test and antibiotics her total bill came to a whopping $17. Why is it so expensive in the US? After about 24 hours she was feeling better (negative for the Dengue Fever). Don’t be afraid to go to the doctor down here for minor illnesses. If you need serious medical care, Thailand may be your best bet to try and get higher quality care quickly.
